User Training
All users must complete NMR training before independently operating NMR instruments at the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Research Center.
This page explains how to schedule training, what to prepare, and how to complete user checkout.
Please complete the following steps before your training session.
Complete the Training Request Form
- Download and print the Financial Responsibility Agreement Form
- Have it signed by your advisor. Rotation students should use their current rotation advisor
- Bring the signed form to your training session
Review Required Instructions
Print and bring the following documents:
Please read these materials briefly in advance so training time can focus on hands‑on practice.
You may bring a sample to practice with during training, if time permits.
A typical sample should contain ~5–20 mg of material in 0.7 mL of deuterated solvent
After completing training, you are expected to practice independently before requesting checkout approval.
During a practice period of several weeks (typically about one month), users should:
- Collect 1H and 13C spectra regularly
- Practice locking and shimming solvents other than CDCl3
- Review the New NMR User Training Procedure Handout
This practice period helps ensure safe and efficient instrument use.
To gain independent access, you must pass a checkout exam.
Practical Requirements
You will be asked to:
- Acquire 1H and 13C NMR spectra
- Lock a D2O sample
- Accurately shim a shimming standard
Written Quiz
A brief 5-question quiz covering:
- Basic NMR commands
- Instrument and lab safety
What to Bring
- An NMR Key Agreement form, signed by your advisor
